Recently Kanyadan Yojana of Madhya Pradesh govt ran into some controversy.
Pregnancy tests on would-be brides by MP govt sparks row
Now State women commission has some right to ask questions. However looking at the larget picture, it is indeed shocking that 13 out of 152 (8.5%) would be brides were found to be pregnant. Normally pre-marriage pregnancy is not considered a huge problem in India. But the percentage figure of 8.5% shows that the test done by MP govt saved some would be bridegrooms and their families from future surprises in store for them. What would happen if some of the men complained after marriage? DNA testing is not even allowed in India to establish parenthood in courts etc. Will the duped men be able to get justice later?
It could also mean that several young girls and their families were trying to misuse the benefits of the scheme.
